Overview#

Before you embark on the main project, it is highly recommended to work through all the exercises. These exercises will cover topics which are relevant for solving the problems in the project and allow you to familiarize yourself with the Quartus Prime design tools as well as Modelsim. The first 3 exercises are warm-up exercises introducing the tools and VHDL. Starting from exercise 4 (EX4), the content is directly relevant for the project. That is, part of or all of the code can be directly reused in the project.

I have made the description of the first exercise relatively detailed to help you get started. As you get familiar with the tools and writing VHDL, you are expected work on and complete the exercises – and later the project – more independently.

To help yourself keep better track of your work, you should make a folder for each exercise (ex1, ex2, ex3, ex4) in your Github-repository. Likewise, create a branch for each exercise to which you can commit and push your code during the development. If you want your code to be reviewed by the course instructor, you should:

  1. create a pull request when you have completed the exercise,

  2. add the course instructor as both a reviewer and assignee to the pull request.

We also encourage you to team up with a fellow student in the course to review each other’s work.

If you want help and feedback during the work with an exercise or later the project, please make use of the dedicated lab hours when the course or lab instructor is present.
